This website utilized three different collections for photographs and research: 

 

 Library of Virginia

  Records of Western State Hospital, 1825-2000

  Very extensive collection of the Hospital

  Includes: Annual records, correspondence, pictures, poems, financial documents, etc.

 

Augusta Historical Society 

  Small collection of documents, photographs, and newspapers found in the attic of DeJarnette's house

 

Forgotten America

  Website of an urban explorer who travels America to document and capture abandoned places in hopes of preserving their history and beauty. 

 

* Modern pictures of abandoned buildings of Western State Hospital and DeJarnette Sanitarium that do not have "ForgottenAmerica.com" on them have been taken by the creator of this website. A special thanks to John Avoli, Executive Director of the Frontier Culture Museum, who took time out of his day to show me around the grounds of the Dejarnette buildings and allowed photographs to be taken.
