Dr. DeJarnette was Superintendent at Western State in the early twentieth century, during the Progressive Era. This era marks a time of reform and progress in many areas, such as politics, economics, and especially science. Along with a strong faith in science and its ablity to heal, the Progressive Era was also a time of racial tension.
